Abstract

This study analyzes the reception of the work of Adam Smith in Spain, specifically the translations and editions of The Wealth of Nations, and how they circumvented censorship, although with significant cuts and adaptations, and the mediation of the work of economist Frenchman Jean Baptiste Say, whose books on political economy were the main source in Spain for the study and understanding of Smith’s economic liberalism and methodological individualism. The conclusion of this study is a starting point that encourages further work on the subject to shed new light on the way the social and historical context decisively influenced not only the temporary receipt of such contributions, but also the understanding of the same.
