Abstract
This study analyses the story of Good Country People by the Catholic writer Flannery O'Connor in order to highlight the underlying issues of the story. In order to do so, literary analysis must be complemented by philosophical analysis. Only by attending to a dialogue between the two disciplines can the text be understood holistically and the transformation that the protagonist undergoes in the course of the story be understood. We contextualise the story in the introduction, the story of the protagonist in the following section, and from there, with a methodology of open reason, we delve into the meaning of the text. So, O'Connor shows how the search for someone to take us in, despite our weaknesses, is a common human longing. For the author, the discovery of that Someone allows us to approach life differently: suffering does not disappear, but we recognise that we are loved, accompanied and consoled. In short, O'Connor, with her literary work, offers a way to confront vulnerability in the light of faith.
