Abstract
We examine Benedict XVI’s vision of the identity and rationality of the University. First we examine why, according to him, this identity is seriously threatened today. Then we study the proposals that have been put forward in order to recover the essential and primary elements of the University. Key to this recovery is the rediscovery of an enlarged reason, a broadening of our understanding of rationality. We attempt to demonstrate the thesis that only from the recovery of this original sense of reason can the university be truly useful to man and Society.
