Abstract

An inadequate use of the turnout technique in classical dance causes many of the injuries in dancers. The main objective of this work was to analyze the biomechanical strategies of movement to prevent the most frequent injuries produced by the turnout technique in classical dance. PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases were used to select the scientific articles to be analyzed in this work. Results showed that the most frequent injuries produced by the turnout technique were located mainly in the ankle and knee. In addition, it was found that the excessive use of movement and limited hip external rotation were the most important risk factors. Finally, significant kinematic differences were found between the basic positions of classical dance, so that a proper alignment of the lower extremity joints during the turnout was proposed. The present study concludes that biomechanics is a tool that allow us to improve classical dance techniques and reduce the risk of injury. This work may be a valuable approach for further studies in this area.
