Abstract

Diego Saavedra Fajardo is a famous diplomat from the first half of the 17thcentury, author of numerous works of political thought, and who has been called «baroque» on many occasions. The adjective, however, is used merely as a temporal appellation, since it seeks to define an author only by the historical period in which he develops his activity. This article, taking into account the particularities of Saavedra’s thought, and approaching it from a detailed reading of his works and his correspondence, carries out a study of his style to determine if the appellation «baroque» is appropriate to the nature of his works and political thought. Through an analysis of the history and significance of the concept, we extract its definition and systematically apply it to Saavedra’s characteristics and style.
