Abstract

In this contribution, we relate notions of modernity and radicalism in the light of Rene Girard’s theory of mimetism. Through this linking, it is a question of accounting for the symbolic dimension - the hard core of the religious mechanism - threatened by individualism consubstantial with hypermodernity. And it is precisely this threat of religious sacrality in favor of scientific rationality and technical spirit that seems to make the ground of extreme behavior, including radicalization. Nourished by a process of reconsideration of the social reality, this movement is accompanied by an inscription in a province of meaning whose corollary is the denial of the social norms surrounding and on the other hand, by the feeling of scapegoating.
