Abstract

After a brief introduction to Milton’s intellectual personality and his main political works, this paper studies the fundamental ideas of The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates, discovering in his assertion that «the power of the kings is derivative, transferrd and commited to them in trust from the people» the theoretical core of the old political contractualism assumed by Milton from the Calvinist and Catholic, especially Jesuit, tradition.
