Enhancing teachers’ digital competence for combating disinformation and fake news through the use of social media in classroom
(2026-01-22) Pérez-Escoda, Ana; Ortega-Fernández, Eglée; Martínez-Otón, Laura; Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación; Universidad Francisco de Vitoria
Enhancing the digital competences of teachers remains a critical and pressing issue, despite that fact almost two decades have passed since their inclusion in education legislation. The emergence of concerning and challenging scenarios, such as the widespread use of social media among minors and the rapid proliferation of disinformation, underscores the necessity for ongoing vigilance and adaptation in this domain. The present study is particularly significant as it examines the support provided to secondary education teachers in addressing the issue of disinformation and fake news in social media. This study has two primary objectives: first, to explore and describe the differences and similarities between teachers and students in terms of their digital competences, use of social media, and the management of disinformation; second, to design training materials for use in the classroom based on the findings. To achieve the first objective, a quantitative methodology was applied to a convenience sample comprising 1,186 students aged 12 to 18 and 166 secondary education teachers. Given the sample distribution, non-parametric statistical analyses were conducted, using the Mann–Whitney U test to compare independent groups. The results provide a basis for an educational approach that aims to improve three distinct areas of digital competence for teachers, as identified in the DigCompEdu framework: facilitating learners´ digital competence, supporting teaching and learning, and empowering learners. Findings from the second stage present a detailed guide for secondary education teachers, including innovative training materials and methodological support for effectively developing and integrating digital competences in the classroom.

This study analyzes the audience ratings of the program El hormiguero (Antena 3) during the initial months of direct competition with La revuelta (TVE1, 2024). It examines the impact of the guest as a factor for competitiveness and viewer loyalty. The relationship between guest profiles and audience behavior is explored according to age, gender, and time slot. A quantitative analysis was conducted on 69 episodes using minute-by-minute data provided by Kantar Media, segmented by gender and age cohorts. Statistical tests (paired Student’s t-test, Friedman’s ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, among others) were applied to identify differences among audience groups and consumption patterns. The data reveal an upward trend in viewership throughout the program and certain age-based segmentation: sports figures attract younger viewers; well-established media personalities generate interest among older audiences; emerging figures, such as Victoria de Marichalar, draw cross-generational viewership. Women display more consistent program consumption, while men show greater variability depending on the guest. Competition with La revuelta has driven content strategy adjustments. It is concluded that guest selection is key to maintaining leadership and retaining viewers in a fragmented television landscape. This study provides empirical evidence on how audience segmentation and narrative structure influence the success of television formats, highlighting the strategic importance of guest profiles in Spanish late-night programming.

Associating speaker variables with English pronunciation ratings in Spanish tertiary education
(2024-01) Pietraszek, Mateusz; Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación
Although the use of English in the ever-changing context of bilingual tertiary education has been extensively studied to date, pronunciation research in the field is still scarce. This paper aims at providing empirical data regarding the hypothesised impact of bilingual education programmes on pronunciation performance operationalised through the notions of intelligibility, comprehensibility and foreign-accentedness. For this purpose, 60 advanced speakers of English from a Spanish university (enrolled both in bilingual and monolingual degree courses) were recorded and assessed by 330 international English speakers from 30 different L1s. Both the speakers and the listeners completed a basic socio-demographic questionnaire. The independent variables were related to the participants’ (1) reported exposure to bilingual instruction at the previous and current levels of education, as well as (2) their overall level in English and (3) their exposure to English abroad. The findings showed that bilingual education was in no way associated with differences in pronunciation ratings. However, the speakers’ level and their experience abroad were correlated with the comprehensibility and foreign-accentedness scores. The results are not only consequential for the understanding of the (lack of) impact of bilingual variables on pronunciation, but they also allow to examine the adequacy of the CEFR phonological descriptors.

The city as a poetic argument : anagnorisis and map of illusions in Columbus (Kogonada, 2017)
(2024) Olazabal, Juan Rubio de; Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación
The film Columbus (Kogonada, 2017) poses a mirror relationship between the inner dynamism of the characters and the dynamism of the city. The latter is deployed in two senses: the cartography or tour of the city itself, that is, Columbus (Indiana, USA) that gives the film its title, and the architectural design of its buildings. This dramatic-cartographic-architectural triangle turns the work into a pertinent case study to understand the catalytic possibilities of the city in the discovery of personal identity and, in turn, to delve into the cinema-urban synergies. The link or ideal meeting between these two arts appears here as movement: the psychological-moral of the characters and the sculpture in museums, churches, squares, etc. that make up the city. Starting from a methodology based on the psychological notions of Aristotelian poetics (anagnorisis, catharsis) and the anthropological notions of Julián Marías about the projection of desire as a map of illusions (Marías, 2018), we propose a poetic analysis of the city of Columbus “Mecca” of architectural modernism in the USA - as a device to rehearse the happiness of the characters, mainly their possibilities of (self) recognition. To our critical apparatus we incorporate notions of audiovisual analysis (typology and shot composition) with support in architectural terminology on urban representation in cinema (Deltell and García, 2022). A concern, the latter, even prior to the filming of Columbus and that contributes to reinforcing the relevance of our proposal.

“You've never had control. That´s the illusion”. Mimesis of world and catharsis in Jurassic Park
(2025-11-28) Encinas Cantalapiedra, Arturo; Gómez de Argüello Olivera, Belén; López-Cuervo Villanueva, Francisco Javier; Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación
The aim of this article is to explore the cinematic narrative and form of Jurassic Park (Spielberg, 1993), in order to identify its textual topic or central thematic concern. For this a mixed methodology was used, incorporating tools from film analysis into the hermeneutics of poetic possible worlds. First, the article demonstrates how the film’s initial four narrative blocks replicate its overall premise on a smaller scale, adapting the central idea to different circumstances. In each case, an external agent intrudes into a system of possibilities, marked by connotations of the unnatural, threatening to destroy that "world." Second, the article outlines the fundamental character traits of those responsible for these unnatural intrusions and how the film portrays the character’s cathartic journey. The one who introduces an improper possibility into the system disastrously attempts to emulate a divine creator, manipulating their reality and suppressing dissenting voices. At the same time, this character type is symbolically represented with the worst attributes of childhood: immaturity, irresponsibility, selfishness, and cowardice. The most eloquent image of the purification of this illusion of control is found in the mirrored shot pairs, which initially depict a certain version of reality, only to reveal, in the film’s final stretch, the hidden truth behind Hammond’s delusional pretensions.

VEROSIMILITUD Y COHERENCIA DEL PERSONAJE. CARACTERIZACIÓN SEMÁNTICA DEL MUNDO POSIBLE DE CHARLES RYDER EN BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, DE EVELYN WAUGH
(2025) Ruiz, Victoria Hernández; Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación
This article explores the semantic traces that provide verisimilitude and coherence in the depiction of characters, in particular, that of the main character and narrator of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited (1945), Charles Ryder. An extension of the theory of possible worlds to cover a wider range of character features or attitudes of experience, concretised in ethical, aesthetic and transcendent patterns, is proposed as a model of study. These patterns will be analysed through artistic textual creation. It will be shown how the semantic density of the character world is determined by a high concentration of meaning propositions that support and structure this world, so that it becomes comprehensible and meaningful to the reader.

Twenty years after its creation as a technological innovation to include listening to audio in blogs, the podcast has established itself as a creative and cultural industry of great reach and commercial efficiency. Its ductile nature, which favours the listener’s autonomy in accessing and personalising their listening, has multiplied the production and consumption of this format to the level of a value chain with an ever-increasing number of actors involved. This article analyses the consolidation of the podcast industry in Spanish by analysing the original offer of the main platforms and audio companies in Spain and Argentina in 2023. It is supposed that, in the current digital ecosystem, these operators have integrated the podcast into the sound menu of information and entertainment by overcoming the synchronicity and transience of radio and making it easier to listen at any time and from any connected device. The results reveal the growing variety of titles, themes, and genres, as well as the similarities and differences between the two countries; conversational podcasts dominate in both countries, ahead of narrative non-fiction podcasts; audio fiction is almost non-existent in Argentina, where the branded podcast technique is more widely used due to the slower development of subscription services. The study, which takes as a reference the data from ONE (2024), validates the potential of podcasts to test new grammars, introduce new topics and reach audiences neglected by traditional radio, in which the more than 500 million Spanish speakers around the world stand out.

This paper analyses the impact of the internet and digitalization on music radio in Spain, traditionally the record industry’s main platform for the discovery and popularization of pop and rock releases. It also explores the way how new listeners reach the medium. Based on the triangulation of metrics of the most played songs on commercial radio, the songs that reached number one and the best-selling tracks between 2008 and 2023, we identify patterns of convergence and divergence that reveal the progressive disconnect between radio programming and consumer purchasing decisions. The study underlines the need for the radio industry to redefine its strategy to adapt to audience preferences and consumption dynamics, now conditioned by digital technologies and distribution channels. In conclusion, the transformation of the musical landscape because of digitalization has not only significantly altered consumers’ listening and purchasing habits but also highlighted the growing need for greater synchronization between radio and digital platforms. Radio, historically a key force in promoting new talent and hits, now faces the challenge of fully integrating into a constantly evolving multimedia ecosystem. To ensure its continued relevance and competitiveness, it must adopt a more flexible and dynamic approach that considers both user behavior in the digital environment and the opportunities offered by new technologies for enhanced interaction and audience loyalty-building.

An archetype for the superhero : substitution and configuration of the personal world in Big Hero 6
(2025-07-01) Encinas Cantalapiedra, Arturo; Merino Gómez, Vera; Pérez de la Peña, María; Salgado Rodríguez, Valeria Andreina; Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación
This article examines the notions of substitution and archetypes in the film Big Hero 6, in both its narrative and audiovisual dimensions from the perspective of poetic possible worlds, exploring how these two notions shape the personal world of the film’s protagonist, Hiro Hamada. Our research makes a novel contribution to the field of Superhero Studies, offering an analysis of the audiovisual characteristics of a superhero film and exploring a work within the genre that has not yet received attention from researchers. The research identifies and explains several narrative strategies and their function: the role of the mediating substitute, the mimetic aspect of exemplary storytelling, and the mechanism of preserving the world’s structure through substitution. Camera position, framing and lighting all serve as audiovisual counterparts of these narrative strategies.

This quasi-experimental study with a control group and mixed methodology evaluates the effects of a program combining Art Therapy and Music Therapy on hospitalized adult oncology patients at the Hospital universitario Doce de Octubre. After three intervention sessions, the experimental group experienced significant improvements in pain, anxiety, depression, and emotional distress compared to the control group, which received standard medical treatment. Significant reductions were observed in pain, anxiety, depression, and distress based on a series of questionnaires and scales related to the patients’ emotional and physiological state (EVA, HADS, PHQ-9, and DME/TD). Additionally, notable physiological improvements were observed, including reductions in systolic blood pressure (-25.34 mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (-11.92 mmHg), and heart rate. Although changes in functional autonomy measured by the BABVD index did not reach statistical significance, a positive trend was observed. Semi-structured interviews revealed improvements in emotional well-being, motivation, and interpersonal relationships. These findings underscore the value of integrating creative therapies as a complement to oncology care, contributing to the improvement of both the physical and emotional well-being of hospitalized patients.

Influence of Suffering in the Workplace in Health, Occupational Safety, and Professional Performance
(2022) Ormaechea, Sheila Liberal; Paredes, Cristina; Gismera, Eduardo; Sastre, Javier; Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación
Suffering in the workplace is probably a more common occurrence than expected in everyday life. In the interests of both, employee wellbeing and company performance, it must be taken seriously in consideration. However, poor knowledge exists concerning the effects of suffering on health and occupational safety because neither the current human management systems, nor the specialized literature directly address this problem. As a consequence there is a lack of evidence regarding how to manage suffering in organizations. Rooted in human resources managers postulates, this work is a thoughtful analysis of data collected from focus group discussions with Top Human Resources Managers of selected companies in Spain. The article offers an innovative look at the under-researched topic of suffering in the workplace to discover what has been done, what has to change and what is to come in the field of suffering.

Making promise visible through design : the case of the City of Vienna place brand
(2023-05) Urquía Uriaguereca, Íñigo; Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación
This article aims to review two fundamental concepts of the doctrine of corporate identity pioneer Wally Olins: the corporate brand as a "promise" and the effectiveness of brand architecture to make it visible. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Olin’s passing, we propose to vindicate the figure of one of the most influential theorists and practitioners in the field of organizational strategy and design. The paper investigates the concept of "promise" from a philosophical and anthropological perspective. Specifically, it takes as a framework of interpretation the philosophy inaugurated by José Ortega y Gasset and continued by Julián Marías for the understanding of human life and communities. The theory of brand architecture as a visual solution to imagine the structure and relationships of an organization is also reviewed. Finally, these concepts are verified based on a branding case developed by the consulting firm Saffron for the City of Vienna. The analyzed case reveals the benefits of clarifying a common promise in the face of an identity problem, as well as the effectiveness of brand architecture to manifest it symbolically.

Teachers’ digital competences in higher education in Portugal and Spain
(2023-10) Dias-Trindade, Sara; Moreira, José António; García Huertas, Juan Gabriel; Garrido Pintado, Pablo; Mas Miguel, Ana; Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación
The potential of DTIC has brought new and emerging challenges to teachers, making it essential to acquire digital competences, especially in virtual learning environments and online technologies. In this sense, based on the DigCompEdu CheckIn self-assessment questionnaire, validated for the Portuguese population by earlier studies, this research aims to identify the most fragile and robust areas of digital competences of Portuguese and Spanish university teachers. The quantitative methodological approach emphasizes teachers’ perception of their digital competences in three dimensions: teachers’ professional competences, teachers’ pedagogical competences and students’ competences and involved 347 teachers from Portugal and Spain. The results show that teachers of the two institutions have an overall moderate level of digital proficiency–level B1 and B2–and that the differences encountered between Portuguese and Spanish teachers (for example, Portuguese teachers have level A2 in area 4–assessment–, while Spanish teachers are already at level B2) highlight the need to invest in specific training that may address specific frailties, and therefore allow for the promotion of their digital competences. Results relating to teaching experience and age show that there is no direct relation between either factor or being digitally competent. Regarding gender, results reveal that men had slightly better results than women. Overall, what the results show is the need for teachers to increase the level of digital competence through specific training, prepared according to the specificities of each institution, and the importance of developing public policies that prepare teachers for a more digital education.
